Goals of the Panama Institute
The research center does not aim at growth but at a careful and qualitative deepening of the on-site research activities. A continuous occupancy of the research facility with longer-term and recurring research activities is intended. Accordingly, a stay of the researchers of at least one month is desired, but it is also available for scientific student excursions. The center strives to facilitate an association of international and national scientists; interpersonal communication is highly valued.
The involvement of indigenous people living in the area of the research facility (or beyond) is explicitly desired and actively encouraged at the center, not only to educate and maintain a livelihood but also to promote upscale education. In addition, proper care is taken to ensure livelihoods without rainforest degradation and conservation in terms of climate change mitigation and social sustainability.
